๐Ÿšš Moving Out: Residency Deregistration

How can I deregister my residency?

Updated over a month ago

If youโ€™re moving to a new address in Belgium or leaving the country, you must notify your local commune.

1๏ธโƒฃ Moving Within Belgium

If youโ€™re moving to a different Belgian city, the process is similar to your first registration:

โœ… Inform Your Commune

  • Visit your current town hall or check if your commune allows online address updates.

  • Some communes require an appointment, so check in advance.

๐Ÿš” Police Visit for Address Check

  • The police may visit your new home within a few weeks to confirm your move.

๐Ÿ†• Update Your ID & National Register

  • Once confirmed, your new commune updates your residency details.

  • You may need to update your Belgian ID card with your new address.

2๏ธโƒฃ Moving Out of Belgium (Deregistration)

If you are leaving Belgium permanently, you need to officially deregister before your departure.

โœ… Inform Your Commune in Advance

  • Notify your local commune at least a few weeks before leaving.

  • Some communes allow online deregistration.

๐Ÿ“„ Receive a โ€œModel 8โ€ Deregistration Document

  • This official document confirms your departure from Belgium.

  • It may be required for tax purposes or administrative procedures in your next country.

๐Ÿ†• Return Your Belgian ID Card (For Non-Nationals)

  • If you hold a Belgian residence permit, you may need to return your card upon deregistration.

๐Ÿฅ Update Social Security & Insurance

  • Inform your health insurance provider (mutuelle/ziekenfonds) to avoid unnecessary charges.

  • Check with your bank if your Belgian account can remain active from abroad.

๐Ÿ“Œ Important: Not deregistering properly may cause administrative or tax issues in the future.

If you have questions about residency registration or moving out, visit the Coloc Housing Help Center or contact your local commune.
