🏠Address change for Belgians

You just moved in? No problem, we got you!

Updated this week

Welcome home! 🎉 If you’re a Belgian citizen who’s just moved into one of our Coloc Housing homes, there’s one small but important task to take care of — updating your official address with your new city or commune.

Let’s walk you through the simple steps, from declaring your move to sending us your Attest van hoofdverblijfplaats / Attestation de résidence principale.

🗓️ Step 1: Within 8 Days of Moving In

You must declare your new address to your local city hall (gemeentehuis / maison communale).
This can usually be done in 2 ways:

Option 1 – Online (recommended)

  • Flanders: via www.burgerprofiel.be → “Wonen en omgeving” → “Adreswijziging doorgeven”.

  • Brussels: via your commune’s Burgerportaal / eGuichet (each commune has its own portal).

  • Wallonia: via www.myebox.be or your commune’s e-guichet.

Option 2 – In Person

  • Go to the population service (dienst bevolking / service population) of your commune.

  • Bring your ID card and your rental contract (or assignment agreement if applicable).

👮 Step 2: Police Address Check (1–3 weeks)

Before their visit, the local police will email you to arrange a timeframe 🕒When they arrive, have ready:

  • Your ID

  • Original co-tenancy agreement

  • (If applicable) Signed assignment agreement

💡 You can find these documents in your Coloc App account → Menu → Contracts → scroll to the bottom of the page → Documents.

📨 Step 3: Confirmation of Your Address

Once the police report confirms your residence, the city administration will officially register your new address in the national register. You’ll receive:

  • A confirmation letter at your new address, or

  • An email notification (if registered online).

💳 Step 4: Update of Your eID Card

Your eID chip will be updated automatically to your new address.
Some communes require you to visit the city hall to reactivate it (PIN update). If required, bring:

  • Your eID

  • The PIN/PUK letter (if you still have it)

🧾 Step 5: Get Your Proof of Residency

Once your address is officially changed, you can download your Attest van hoofdverblijfplaats (Dutch) or Attestation de rĂŠsidence principale (French).

Flanders

  • Go to “Attesten en toelatingen”

  • Click on “Attest van hoofdverblijfplaats"

Brussels

  • Log in to your commune’s burgerportaal / e-guichet

  • Go to “Wonen en bouwen”

  • Click “Attest van hoofdverblijfplaats”

Wallonia

  • Log in at www.myebox.be

  • Go to “Documents communaux” or “Attestations de rĂŠsidence”

  • Click “Attestation de rĂŠsidence principale”

📤 Step 6: Send It to Coloc Housing

Once you’ve downloaded your proof of residency, please send it to us through the app:
Tap “Support” → Your housing manager → “Proof of Residency”

This confirms your official registration at your Coloc address ✅

⚠️ What If You Don’t Declare Your Address Change?

Not updating your official address can cause administrative issues — such as delays in your mail, tax correspondence, and city records. It may also result in fines or extra municipal charges. Coloc Housing relies on your official registration to keep all tenancy records compliant, so please make sure this step is done ✅

💡 Tips:

  • Submit your address change as soon as you move in — the sooner you declare it, the sooner your police check and registration will be completed.

  • If things seem to be taking too long, give your city’s administration office a quick call:

    • Antwerp: 03 22 11 333

    • Brussels (City of Brussels): +32 2 279 22 11

    • Ghent: 09 266 71 50

    • Leuven: 016 27 21 94

    • Bruges: 050 44 80 00

    • Kortrijk: 1777

    • Mechelen: 0800 20 800

    • Liège: 04 221 81 11
